Women, Poverty & Economics

Reducing feminized poverty has always been a core UNIFEM priority. To support women in reshaping conditions at both ends of the economic spectrum, the fund’s programmes help bring gender equality into trade and economic policies, and expand women’s access to markets, goods and services.

UNIFEM helps women reshape conditions at both ends of the economic spectrum, enlarging women's participation in both the overarching policies governing resource flows and the everyday practicalities of gaining secure livelihoods.

Across South Asia, UNIFEM has assisted with the formation of networks of home-based workers that are now discussing social protection proposals with their governments.

Following the Outcome 4 of the Strategic Plan 2008 – 2011, UNIFEM plans to lobby with the Government of Pakistan to ensure that budget processes incorporate gender equality.

UNIFEM, the Commonwealth Secretariat and Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) have developed the Gender Responsive Budgeting website to support efforts of governments, women’s organizations, members of parliaments and academics to ensure that planning and budgeting effectively respond to gender equality goals.
